Making the choice to work with a therapist takes a lot of courage. Here is some information to help you prepare for the journey:
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?
The first session is primarily focused on structuring the therapeutic relationship and information gathering. In an effort to determine whether our practice can meet an individual, couple’s or family’s needs, the following types of questions may be explored:
- What has brought you here, and at this point in your life?
- What are some key events/factor that have shaped you and/or your relationships?
- What would you most like to change about yourself and/or your relationships at this time?
One of the keys to success in therapy is a good fit between yourself and your therapist. By the end of your session, you can expect to have a reasonable idea of their therapist’s personal style and approach to therapy. You may also get a sense of whether we can accomplish desired goals with a brief series of sessions or will need to make a longer-term commitment. In addition, you should have a clear sense of whether your therapist has understood the issues that brought you to therapy.
IS THE INFORMATION I SHARE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?
Registered Psychotherapists are ethically and professionally bound to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the personal health information clients disclose to them.
WHAT IS THE THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?
Your therapist has a professional background in social and client care, and is a graduate of accredited masters and doctoral degree programs in the field of counselling. She is a Registered Psychotherapist and a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist. Her practice features ongoing cross-cultural experience with individuals, couples and families.
